> Eye Examinations
You should have a regular eye examination every 2 years to both assess your vision and especially to check the health of your eyes by testing for conditions such as cataract and glaucoma. Our highly experienced optometrists use the latest equipment and techniques
to ensure that these vital areas are properly cared for - click here to find out more about what having your eyes examined involves.
> Bulk-billing and Changes to Examination Fees from 1 January 2006
Whenever possible we bulk-bill your examination fee to Medicare, which usually covers the "standard" part of your consultation. Some of the specialised imaging procedures we perform, however, are regarded by Medicare as being additional to a standard consultation. If these tests are performed, a separate fee will be charged to you directly.
These non-standard procedures include retinal photography, corneal topography and retinal tomography, which we perform according to clinical need. We believe the retinal imaging procedures are a vital part of monitoring your eye health. Although they are not necessarily performed at every visit, it is important that they are done on a regular basis. Corneal topography is used mainly in contact lens practice.
Your optometrist will be happy to explain these additional tests and why they are performed. Or click here for our handout on the tests.
> Orthokeratology - clear vision without spectacles or surgery!
Orthokeratology, or "Ortho-K" as it is commonly known, involves the overnight wear of rigid contact lenses to enable good vision during the day without glasses or contact lenses. It is a safe, non-invasive and reversible method of vision correction which offers an attractive lifestyle option for short-sighted people such as those who play sports and/or work in challenging environments for contact lenses. > Cataract Surgery Co-management
Cataract occurs commonly in older people, and usually results in a gradual deterioration of vision. The usual method of dealing with cataracts is to remove the lens inside the eye which has clouded with age, and to replace it with a plastic lens. Patients who undergo cataract surgery who have previously worn spectacles to improve their distance vision frequently find that they are able to view most distant objects without glasses after surgery.
If you have cataracts that require surgery, it is important that you receive considered independent pre-operative advice about your options, that you are referred to an experienced, highly competent surgeon and that you receive appropriate follow-up care after the surgery. We are highly experienced in advising our patients about these options and in all of these areas.
